A. Population

In the 2010 survey of population, Samar province recorded 733,377 persons which ranked second in Region VIII. The largest city is Calbayog followed with Catbalogan city. The former is a chartered city and the latter is the capital of the province as well as the seat of provincial administration. Calbayog City and Catbalogan with population of 172,778 and 94,317, respectively, accounts for 23.56 percent and 12.86 percent of the provincial population. The next larger municipalities in terms of population are Basey, 50,423 (6.88%); Daram, 41,322 (5.63%); and, Sta. Rita, 38,082 (5.19%). The municipality of Matuguinao is still the least populated with population of 6,746 (0.92%). By year 2012, the province population is projected to 735,010, and will reach to a total of 900,000 by the year 2015 (Table 12).

The 2010 population (733,377) of the province grew by 14.39 percent or an increase of 92,253 from its 2000 population (641,124) and with an average of 9,225 persons every year. Almost all of the component cities and municipalities of Samar increased in population size from 2000-2010 except for the municipality of Tagapul-an that showed a negative trend. Calbayog City recorded the highest population and considered the driver of population growth. Refer Table below.

A.1 Size and Growth

Of the two (2) urban centers, Catbalogan is second to Calbayog city as the fastest growing settlement in the province. Matuguinao has the highest average annual rate of increase at 2.88 percent, from 2000-2007, but least in population density. Next to Matuguinao are the municipalities of Sta. Rita with 2.08 percent; Talalora, 1.89 percent; Pagsanghan, 1.67 percent; Marabut, 1.50 percent; Tarangnan, 1.43 percent; and, Basey with 1.38 percent as presented in Table above. From 2000-2010, population growth of the province recorded at 1.35 percent (see Table below).

A.2 Population Density

The population density of the province in 2010 was placed at 131 persons per square kilometer. Catbalogan, as the capital town of the province where almost all functions are available is the most densely populated with 787 persons per square kilometer (see Table below). It is six (6) times bigger than the province's population density. This is further aggravated not only by the increasing population but also by the limited land area (119.80 sq.km.). While Matuguinao, which is located in the hinterland is the least densely populated with only 19 persons per square kilometer.

San Jose de Buan and the island municipality of Tagapul-an posted decreasing population density in the three year period from 2007 to 2010. This decreasing trend could be attributed to out-migration of the working population to the nearest urban center or to the National Capital Region (NCR) for employment and the accessibility problems of these municipalities. The rest of the municipalities registered increases in population. Other municipalities with population densities substantially higher than the provincial average are Zumarraga (450 p/sq.km.), Sto.Niño (426 p/sq.km.), Almagro (405 p/sq.km.) and Daram (400 p/sq.km.)

The number of households in 2007 (see Table below) rose to 135,355 or an increase of 19,862 (17.20%) households since 1995. Average size of household within the three-year censal period (1995, 2000 and 2007) was almost the same except for a point one (0.1) percentage increase in 2000.

A3. Sex and Dependency Ratio

Based on Table below, male household population (359,176) outnumbered females (334,713) by 7.31 percent or 24,463 persons as of 2007. It could also be noticed that in aged 0-54 years, there were more males than females. However, females dominated their male counterparts in aged 55 years and over.

The 2007 census indicated a sex ratio of 107 males/100 females. This figure was slightly higher than in the year 2000 which was 106 males/100 females.

The bulk of the total household population in 2007 was at the younger ages. About two-fifths (41.27%) or 286,342 of the total household population were under 15 years of age. From this group, children (aged 0-4) accounted 33.08 percent or 94,723. The productive or the active age group (aged 15-64) shared more than half (53.71%) or 372,686 of the household population and only 5.02 percent were in aged 65 and over.

The overall dependency ratio in 2007 was 86, which meant that for every 100 persons in the working ages 15 to 64 years, there were 86 dependents (77 persons aged 0-14 – young dependents; 9 persons aged 65 & above – old dependents). The 2007 dependency ratio was lower compared with the 2000 figure.
